VoIP phones

I'm thinking of ditching satellite, land line, and DSL connection and moving to cable for internet, tv, and phone service. I'm still doing the numbers, but at first glance, if I use cable tv, cable internet, and Vonage's Basic package, I can save about $30 per month.

The Vonage service gives me quite a few calling features that I don't have currently, including long distance. Cable gives me similar tv channels, a Tivo option, and high-speed internet all in one. I've been really satisfied with satellite and DSL, but saving $30/month is nothing to sneeze at.

Do any of you have phone service through Vonage or your cable provider? If so, what do you think? I've heard good and bad.

Comments

I have cable EVERYTHING and it is reliable and has unlimited long distance. If the price is better it is a no brainer. :)

I recently signed up for telephone service through my cable provider. It's excellent. The only catch, (up here anyways), was that they had to alter the telephone line and if I ever go back to regular telephone service, there is a substantial fee to make it operable again.

I've also heard that some cable/telephone providers may not be able to provide enhanced 911 service, depending on where you live, so you may want to check that out before you sign up.

I'm in the process of moving into a new house and I've been thinking the same thing. The Vonage deal seems too good to be true. My only fear is they will a] not make a financial go of it in the end, and get bought out by the evil Verizon, or b] become so popular that they can't keep up with demand, and service will suffer.
The Tivo experience is "Wunderbar", my friend in Scottsdale has it, and let me tell you watching 'ANYTHING' without commercials is a Godsend!!!

Thanks for the info, y'all, it is much appreciated. I have Tivo on my satellite and I love it...greatest thing since sliced bread.

Do yourself a favor: if its "Time Warner" cable, don't do it. Customer service sucks. Follow up sucks. We had on average in a 3 month period 20 days of complete outage/month, which they claimed we would be reimbursed for. Not so, when came the bill!

We would have had to called in and reported every service problem (minute by minute, I kid you not, according the supervisor of cust svc) in order to be compensated.

And our bills increased after 3 months (read the fine print).

And they blamed all the service probs on "underground lines instead of above ground lines".

And they dug up our garden 4 times, our neighbors front yard 2 times, and pissed us off umpteen times.

Just FYI.
